Tadalafil and the gym: does it help your workout?
You may have seen tadalafil mentioned in fitness videos or bodybuilding forums, often with claims about better pumps, improved blood flow and stronger workouts. But how much of that is backed by evidence?

Why do people talk about it?
Tadalafil is a medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction. It works through a pathway that relaxes smooth muscle and can widen blood vessels. That effect has led to interest in using it for a bigger muscle “pump” during training. However, its action on blood vessels does not establish that it improves gym performance.
Does it build muscle or improve performance?
The research is limited. Small studies have explored tadalafil’s effects on exercise and body composition, but they do not establish it as a reliable way to build muscle, increase strength or recover faster. One controlled exercise study found no improvement in performance or cardiorespiratory measures. A fuller-looking muscle during a workout also doesn’t tell you whether you’re gaining muscle over time.
Can you train while taking it?
If you’ve been prescribed tadalafil, ask your prescriber whether there are any exercise restrictions relevant to your health. Headaches, indigestion, back pain and muscle aches can occur, and its blood-pressure effects may leave some people feeling dizzy. Stop your session if you feel unwell. Tadalafil must not be combined with nitrate medicines, such as GTN, or recreational “poppers”, because the combination can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure. Tell your prescriber about any medicines and supplements you use. Tadalafil has an established role in treating erectile dysfunction. Using it purely for a gym pump adds risks without a proven training benefit. For progress you can measure, focus on consistent training, suitable nutrition and enough recovery.
